The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

Willy Joy Fool's Gold Podcast

I just got tipped off to the release of Willy Joy's new Fool's Gold podcast and it's definitely worth a download. Actually, you should just subscribe to the entire free podcast while you're at it, as surely there will be nothing but quality on that feed.

And if that doesn't fix your Fool's Gold cravings, be sure to mark down Friday June 4th on your calendars, as Nick Catchdubs himself will be back in Chicago and DJing the debut of Glory Daze over at Beauty Bar along with DJ Gant-Man and yours truly Just Desserts! So now ya know...

Veoba Pre-Launch at Angels & Kings

Sure they are a week old and the actual launch party was last night at Beauty Bar, but here are the shots from last Wednesday at Angels & Kings anyway! It was a grand night, with musical stylings from myself, Kid Color, Willy Joy, Kid Static and Finger on the Pulse.

Claychella 2010 Wrap-Up

It's hard to believe it's already 10 days since this year's Claychella went down at Lincoln Hall, but that's a fact, Jack. I had to head down to Austin a few days after the party, so getting any photos online has been impossible. On the top of my list of things to do, however, is give a huge shout out to everyone who supported the event--from the DJs who played, to all of the people who came out, and everyone else that helped out in any way. Laura at Syn Vodka was essential in making things work out so big props to her!! I really aim to make the day a community affair and try my best to make it as affordable and fun as possible, which can be a big undertaking with so many people being involved.

Boring words aside, I hope you had a good time if you made it out. I was unable to take many photos myself, as managing all of the DJ sets and general goings on was way more time consuming than I had planned for. You can find the few photos I did take here and stay tuned for some additional shots from Santi along with the photo booth photos from Ryan Mitchell in the hours/days to come.. oh, there are also some photos over at Time Out Chicago that can be found here.

Oh, and be on the look-out for some rad Just Desserts (our monthly Lincoln Hall dance party) in the months to come, including sets from Fan Death, Phenomenal Hand Clap Band & more!

Killa Noiz

November 28, 2009 | Empty Bottle | Chicago: Half of the cities DJs were on the bill for the dance party at Empty Bottle, which is perhaps my favorite venue in Chicago, yet somehow never seems to be able to pull off an insane dance party properly. Perhaps the kids are just too cool for that, I don't know... click to see all the photos from the party!

Dimes & Dozens

7/17/2009 | Chicago: The dubfrequency dudes had me come out and take some photos at their epic party at Debonair after the first night of Pitchfork. The lineup was jam packed and both floors were bumpin'. I'm about to fall asleep at the computer so I will leave you with the photos and bid you adieu. And yes, the remainder of the Pitchfork photos are on the way.. In the meantime, be sure to check out the 2-page photo spread in this weeks Chicago Reader!

Night Time Flying

7/16/2009 | Chicago: Let's rewind a few days real quick and look at some photos from Willy Joy's monthly party, Fly By Night at Debonair. This party was kind of the beginning of the crazy weekend for me. After this there was no letting up until Monday rolled around. Along with Willy, Jokers of the Scene and Franki Chan played the jams. Check out all the shots here or see a few selects below.

Fly Birthdays

4/16/2009 - chicago - flybynight, willy joy, klever, craze, mano, debonair, empire, chicago, timbuk2

Thursday night in Wicker Park was the scene for two epic parties. Willy Joy & Co. celebrated the anniversary of the Fly By Night party with headliners Craze and Klever on the decks. Mano also played, in addition to hosting his own birthday party across the street at Empire, which was nothing short of madness. The line was long and the building was packed. I think I hit at least a dozen people inadvertently with my camera in there. As always, click the thumbs to see all the pics!

FlyByNight with Nadastrom

Another FlyByNight came and went. This time Nadastrom (myspace) which is half Dave Nada and half Matt Nordstrom headlined the monthly party at Debonair. Resident Willy Joy and Black Holes rounded out the lineup at the 18+ dance party. It's funny how the crowd sort of sorts out by age with the youngsters occupying the dance floor and the oldies surrounding the bar. All in all, it was a pretty good time and it's always great to see Willy bring in solid talent from around the country.

Another Monday, Another Rehab

You know Rehab and you love Rehab. It's turned into Chicago's best and worst hipster hangout and consistently draws huge turnouts on arguably the least desirable night of the week to hang out and drink til 4am. This week was no exception.. Willy Joy played the jams along with Hiroki and residents Yello Fever & Team Bayside High. It was fun for me to get back into the groove of shooting nightlife again.. been kind of avoiding it lately.

Anyhow, see all the photos by clicking below and be sure to come out again next week.. think I'm playing la musica!
