The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

san francisco pt. 2

Scenes from San Francisco & Oakland, June 2009: I stayed with my friends Tara & Tracy, the twins (pictured) who put me up and fed me like they always do, in style. Most of these photos are from in and around 24th St. If you're in the area, stop by Pop's and have a beer. (via)

san francisco pt. 1

Scenes from San Francisco, June 2009: I love The Mission, I love 24th St., I love Delores Park, I love San Francisco. Girl in the floral dress is my friend Fernanda, who you may have seen in an ad for American Apparel at some point. I had, and didn't even know it was her. Oh, and it happened to be Pride weekend while I was there, thus the costumes. I also discovered  (pictured) & found a book of short stories by Bukowski laying on a sidewalk which has kept me good company since its discovery. More photos to come. (via)

More Hanging in SF

6/29-30/2009 | San Francisco: Here are just a few more random shots from wandering around San Francisco for a few days last week.  SF is definitely one of my favorite cities. Take a look here if you want to see the rest of the photos!

San Francisco Pride

6/27-28/2009 | San Francisco: It was Pride weekend in San Francisco while I was there. I managed to miss (avoid?) the craziest stuff, which was fine with me because I just enjoyed wandering around at my own pace and hanging with some friends. I always love wandering around that city and taking photos on the streets and even though I spent more time hanging out than I did shooting photos, I still managed to get some fun shots. You can see a few below or check them all out here.

Blow Up SF

6/26/2009 | San Francisco: I arrived in San Francisco last Friday afternoon and had a day to wander around and hang out before heading over to Rickshaw Stop to shoot Blow Up SF. I spent most of said time with Richie Panic and his friends before meeting up with Ava Berlin in hopes of using her couch to take a quick nap. The nap never happened because an opening slot for me to DJ came up last minute, so we all headed over to the club and I played a few jams before the local DJs took over and got the kids to go crazy. Lazer Sword, Richie Panic, DJ Dials & Marko from Sugarcult all played. Here, you can see all the photographic evidence from the day, which includes plenty of photos of Richie's cat and plenty of photos of Richie himself.. along with more photos of my week in San Francisco to come!

iPhonetography #6

The last few weeks I have been slacking pretty hard on getting this ole site updated. Lack of updates and people lose interest. A big reason for the lack of photos has been that I have been spending a ton of time DJing (I'm actually playing TONIGHT! -- Wednesday the 15th -- at Burlington for a pseudo everyoneisfamous.com anniversary party, come hang!) and not shooting nightlife stuff as much. The upside is that I have lots of things planned and many more ideas in my head and will try my damnedest to keep things rolling around here and keep people interested. Another good way to keep things moving is to get more people involved in posting content. If you happen to be reading this little brain flow, feel free to drop a comment down below (or email me) with thoughts and things you'd like to see--or perhaps you feel you might be a welcomed asset to the site yourself! Let me know!

Moving on, here is another iphonetography update feating some shots taken at the end of 2008, mostly from the iheartcomix US Tour I went on with Franki & Toxic. If you like photos from airplanes, this is the update for you!

Blow Up, Party Bus & Club 222, SF

Unfortunately for me, my 5 days in San Francisco were severely damaged by a head cold. Instead of going out and partying every night, I mostly just stayed in Tara & Tracy's apartment and watched 30 Rock and Arrested Devolopment. I missed the first night of the Cool Kids / Q-Tip US Tour, which was a total bummer.

I did manage to head out into town one night and have a ton of fun.  Friday night got started with a trip on the Blow Up SF Party Bus.  Haha, it was totally random and totally fun, aside from the annoying guy who told me he has the same Lacoste polo I was wearing and "rocks it fucking hard." Wardrobe change, please.

After the bus I walked down Market to Club 222 to say hello to a few friends. It was the second time I ended up at this strange, skinny bar.  I'm still unsure what I think of the place.  There were def some dudes doing lines in the bathroom stall, though, which made it feel like SF.

Back to Blow Up, by now I was rather drunk.  To be honest, I got a little too drunk and the night got a bit blurry.  Richie Panic and Jesse Jams were DJing and Fernanda was "hosting."  I had one too many Vodka Bulls and then the twins and I walked back to their car, which was so not "walking distance" .. probably like a mile away .. with a quick fast food stop for a delicious burrito.  And thanks to a gallon or so of water before I went to bed I woke up hangover free the following day!

Vessel, SF : iheartcomix tour stop #14

We rolled into SF and I immediately remembered how much I love shooting 35mm on the streets of downtown San Fran!  Seriously, there are sooo many crazy interesting people and scenes going on. I'd been lugging my Nikon FM2 along with me the whole trip but hardly even used it until we got to the last freaking city.  Oh well.

Franki, Toxic & I headed out to eat at some delicious Indian joint near the hotel. Fernanda, mi amiga nueva, came out and met up with us and then we went out looking for adventure.  There was a nerd gathering of about 200 kids outside the Game Stop.  They were all waiting for the new WoW to come out I guess.  We went and tired to go ice skating but had no luck so went back to the hotel for "wine hour."  Some cute fresh-off-the-boat Japanese woman served us with a smile while annoying older white dudes hit on her non-stop.  Finally after a few hours of surfing YouTube for French hip hop videos, we headed to Vessel for the show.

The show was mostly fun albeit a little slow.  Sleazemore opened up and it was good to see him and the gang again.  A small group of us headed back to the hotel to have some more fun and the dude at the door pleaded with us that they had a strict no party policy.  Ok Ok, we say.  We got away with our little gathering for at least 30 minutes until the dude came up and broke it up.  And that was that.  Simon had to wake up at like 6am to catch his flight back to Paris and luckily we called for a wake up call because I don't think my alarm even went off.  Au revoir!  C'est la vie!
