The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

Haiti Benefit Show

The Haiti Benefit Show at Reggie's was an All-Star hiphop affair. Many of my favorite Chicago hiphop acts were there, from Rhymefest to The Cool Kids and Mic Terror to GLC, the show never really had a chance to slow down very much and I ended up taking over a thousand photos.

Personal highlights included: Kids These Days opening set (the kids can play!), the epic BBU>He Say She Say>Mano>Hollywood Holt>Mic Terror epic high energy combo & the performance and collaboration announcment from Rhymefest, Juice, Twone Gabz and Mikkey Halsted!

No Age

So No Age was in town playing a corporate-funded free show at Reggie's down on State and 21st or so.  I had never yet been there so I was kinda curious to check out the space.  Aside from hearing bad things from a metal-head I know, I thought the venue was pretty good personally.  They also have food, including 25 cent wings on Tuesdays!

As for the show, Titus Andronicus opened up.  I'd never heard of them prior and they put on a decent show themselves.  The best part about the night was that No Age played yet another show the same night over at AV-Aerie!  This ws perfect since I had to shoot the first show but desperately wanted to join into the faux No Age mosh pit.

You can see photos by me and a review from Miles Raymer over at ChicagoReader.com [here]
