The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

Mikey Rocks - Foreign Features

Stumbled upon this new video from Mikey Rocks of Cool Kids fame via illroots. It looks as tho the kids are keepy busy with plenty of side projects these days. This track is very fresh and I am a huge fan of the production. The video is also simple and well done (sup Canon 5Dm2). (vimeo)

The Cool Kids - Gold Links Music Video

I haven't been hearing from Chicago's finest Cool Kids too much lately as they have been busy touring the world and recording with probably everyone in the hiphop world. That said, I just stumbled upon their new video for Gold Links. The song is top notch. Classic Cool Kids beat and lyrics. The video, on the other hand, while not bad could probably due with 50% less effects clutter. It's a simple video seemingly shot on one location in perhaps an hour, which is fine! Why do we need 2 days of post effects to make it look all crazy? I don't think we do. Oh well. It's still a solid production and most definitely worth a watch! (youtube)

The Death Set Music Video

When I'm in the mood for some upbeat rock, The Death Set is tops. I still remember my first experience with them a few years back at SXSW when they ended up throwing an amp into a pool and basically causing all-out pandemonium. They recently released a new video for a cover they did of Daedelus. It's pretty well done and totally animated. Check it out above. (vimeo)

Juiceboxxx - 100mph (AC Slater remix)

We've got another Just Desserts coming up on Saturday, August 21st at Lincoln Hall (lineup to be released soon!). Originally, Juiceboxx was slated to perform but in the end it did not work out due to timing of schedule issues. I'm really bummed about it because he's so much fun live. As a small consolation, check out his recent video for the 100MPH song remixed by AC Slater. The video is my new favorite in a long line of solid Juiceboxxx music videos. (vimeo)
