The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

Punches - Feeling Right

My NYC pals Greg & Darin, behind such ventures as Finger on the Pulse and Dinner with the Band, are two parts of the nu disco trio Punches. They've just released their first single, Feeling Right and I've gotta say the title is accurate. This track is pretty perfect, give it a listen below.

Last Night's DJ Set.

Okay, so it wasn't necessarily last night, but that's what I'm calling this new ongoing topic. I played a show last Thursday night at Let's Get Weird at evilOlive. It was a ton of fun and I opened for Will Eastman who is out of DC and was on a bit of a midwest tour, I think. I stuck to mainly a nu disco vibe but tried to mix things up a bit to keep the early evilolive crowd entertained. Thanks again to the KDM dudes for having me! It's always a fun time at their parties.

Last Night's DJ Set.

I've been meaning to post more music on this blog for, oh, four years now. I figured now was a good time to start. I'm always a fan of paying attention to what other DJs play so I thought I would start posting my set lists along with some select mp3's after some of my DJ sets. Here goes...

Last night I opened and closed at Tuesdays Are Famous. We had a good crowd in there early (cough, open bar, cough) so I tried to keep things up-beat and energetic. For my second set, the place was dead so I said "fuck it, I'm playing 90's shit."

Introducing DJ Boyfriend

We've got another side project coming out of Chicago, time time it's Flosstradamus' Young Josh who passed along his first release entitled The Shouts pt 2 via his new project DJ Boyfriend. In iconic Daft Punk form, DJ Boyfriend gives props to many of Chicago's most notable DJs, parties, venues, city nicknames and other things-Chicago. You can listen to or download the track below and then go check out his first podcast release to go along with it.

Kid Color's Palette Two

Kid Color is back with another solid mixtape. This one features two brand new remixes of his own making, my favorite being the slick Delphic remix of "Doubt" which I "debuted" last weekend at One Night Stand. You can find the mix and both remixes below...

Kid Color's Palette One

Our friend, and occasional everyoneisfamous blogger, Kid Color recently released a new mix tape, which apparently is going to be a regular deal from here on out. And that is good news because the mix is very solid and worth a dozen or so listens. Check it out below.

Gemini Club on Boy Kings TV

I'm a fan of Gemini Club and they recently got the BKTV treatment with a fun video and live performance at the Boy King estate. You can vaguely make me out in the background there firing my camera flash. If you missed the photos from the shoot, you can check them out here. Then check out Gemini Club live at one of their upcoming shows, listen to one of their songs below and of course, watch the video above! (vimeo) (boykings)

Totally Michael - Summertime

I know an uplifting song about summertime is about as far from accurate as it gets right now in Chicago, however, last week Bloomington, Indiana resident Totally Michael released his new video that includes cameos from a half dozen of our friends, including Flosstradamus and Franki Chan. The video was directed by another friend of everyoneisfamous, Jesus of Demonbabies fame. Check out the video above or download the song below. (vimeo) @totallymichael

{mp3} Le Principle - Your Magic

Le Principle - Your Magic (mp3) (myspace)

I need to get into the habit of posting more music, especially now that I am DJing quite a bit. I'll kick things off with a little gem I came across recently. I know very little about these guys, but I do know that their disco sound is very fun! And while on the subject of disco, be sure to mark down November 5th on your calendar because that's the first date of the monthly disco party I'm putting together along with Skyler at Empire Liquors. No cover, great guests & more info to come! And perhaps even a DJ set from Le Principle in the future..
