The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

Claychella 2010 Wrap-Up

It's hard to believe it's already 10 days since this year's Claychella went down at Lincoln Hall, but that's a fact, Jack. I had to head down to Austin a few days after the party, so getting any photos online has been impossible. On the top of my list of things to do, however, is give a huge shout out to everyone who supported the event--from the DJs who played, to all of the people who came out, and everyone else that helped out in any way. Laura at Syn Vodka was essential in making things work out so big props to her!! I really aim to make the day a community affair and try my best to make it as affordable and fun as possible, which can be a big undertaking with so many people being involved.

Boring words aside, I hope you had a good time if you made it out. I was unable to take many photos myself, as managing all of the DJ sets and general goings on was way more time consuming than I had planned for. You can find the few photos I did take here and stay tuned for some additional shots from Santi along with the photo booth photos from Ryan Mitchell in the hours/days to come.. oh, there are also some photos over at Time Out Chicago that can be found here.

Oh, and be on the look-out for some rad Just Desserts (our monthly Lincoln Hall dance party) in the months to come, including sets from Fan Death, Phenomenal Hand Clap Band & more!

Photos from Lincoln Hall, Chicago. October 25 & 27, 2009. These shots were taken during the first few weeks of operation at Lincoln Hall in Chicago, which is a new venue created by the owners of the venerable Schubas establishment. All photos were taken with no flash on either the 24mm/f1.4 or the 17-40mm f4. The space is real nice and the sound is great as well. As far as photos go, I haven't shot enough shows there yet to have a grasp of it yet, but I'm optimistic about it. I've also been doing a monthly dance party of my own at the venue called Just Desserts. Look for it if you're in the mood to dance!

As for the bands covered, I recently struggled to come up with my top 10 favorite albums of 2009 at the request of Nicholas Scimeca, who posted a bunch of his friends' favorites on his blog. I decided local Chicago newcomers The Smith Westerns deserved a spot on my list. View all the photos after the jump. (via)

Just Desserts #1

November 11, 2009 | Lincoln Hall | Chicago: It came and went! The first night of our first monthly dance party at Lincoln Hall. I had a great time, while nervously wondering around the venue, hoping people would show up and making sure everyone was having a good time. I think most people did.. I know I did! Matt Roan killed it for real, proving he's one of the best around. Kid Color got things going early with some awesome disco tunes, Black Holes played a heavy but short set due to his trouble using a calendar (haha), and Clash Gordon kept the party alive until the end of the night. A serious thanks to all that came out and a happy birthday shout out to Genna as well!

Be sure to check us out every month! It's only going to get crazier. Next month (12/16) we are stoked to have Annalyze headlining. You may not know her, but she's Lady Sovereign's touring DJ and a super awesome turntableist. Along with her, we're throwing a CD Release party for Keith MacKenzie of illeven eleven records. The dude is rad and plays all over the world. Team Bayside High will also be there to get the party started along with residents Kid Color and myself, Just Desserts. Best yet, it's all free before 10pm or only $3 all night long with rsvp. Oh, and $3 Syn Vodka all night as well!!
