The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

befian from hong kong

While out in Asia I looked up my old modelmayhem account password and looked to see if there were any models in Hong Kong who might want to shoot some photos.  Befian replied and we got together one day and hung out and did some photos.  It was totally spontaneous, nothing planned.  We got a bit of a late start so we didn't shoot a ton, but there are a few frames I liked.

Everything was shot on my 5D with either the 50mm f/1.4 or the 17-40mm f/4.5 along with two flashes (one on camera 220ex and an off camera with a Wein optical sensor to sync it).

hong kong pt. 2

(right) Bank of China Building.

I really liked the single guy in the spotlight thingy going on here.  Had to wait a little while for it to pan out.

Some shops in the plaza of an apartment complex on the edge of the city near the Chinese boarder.

School kids going home.. the trouble with shooting at f1.4 is that if you don't nail the focus you can ruin an otherwise nice shot.  I was lazy here and focused on the brick wall and you can definitely tell, esp on the high res.

So there you go, some photos from Hong Kong completed.  I will be the first to admit these photos are less than masterpieces.  I'd much rather keep this blog loose and post a little bit of everything.  I'm sure travel photos are boring as hell for some people but perhaps a few of you out there find them interesting.

hong kong pt. 1

Some of the busier metro stations have glass walls between the train and platform, presumably to keep people from jumping into the path of oncoming trains.  Just a guess.

So there ya go, some random Hong Kong shots.. a few more to come.  I was in HK for a week but didn't shoot as much as usual, for a few reasons.  It was raining a lot and I was also a little tired from being on the road for over a month when all was said and done.  I wanted to do a series of street portraits but never managed to begin.  Oh well, I'll just have to go back.
