The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

Hard Rock and the Party Bus

Saturday was one of those days. The kind of day where the alcohol is free and it doesn't seem to stop. The kind of day that kicks you in the ass the following morning and makes you re-asses your lifestyle. So yeah, I'm now temporarily on the wagon and enjoying a booze-free existence. All that aside, Saturday night was a ton of fun! I left Lollapalooza early to shoot an event at Debonair. This was followed by a DJ set at Hard Rock along with pals Kid Color, Bayside High, Franki Chan and Flosstradamus. In addition, I hopped on the Vitamin Water party bus for a stroll down Michigan Avenue. Environmentally friendly clubbing at its finest!

iheartcomix Showcase at Beauty Bar

Thursday in Austin was a looong one. I shot the Carniville and then headed over to Beauty Bar for the iheartcomix showcase, which went til 2am and included artsits such as The Very Best, The Toxic Avenger, Men, Acid Girls, Juiceboxxx, Hollywood Holt, Ninjasonik and a bunch more. There was also a rad appearance from Bill Murray, who stuck around to watch Hollywood Holt and Ninjasoik before being mobbed by the crowd for photos and autographs. I held back and gave the dude his space. I guess I'm not cut out for the TMZ world we live in.

los angeles

Scenes from Los Angeles, July 2009: I spent something more than a week in LA and hardly got a photo to show for it. Admitedly, my time was spent slacking off. Lounging, hanging, chilling, eating, drinking... I also had a few DJs gigs. I played at the Standard Hollywood w/ CC Sheffield (pictured), who also takes good photos of naked girls & I played at Short Stop another night. A very large portion of my time was spent at any point along Sunset Blvd. Oh, and I should not fail to mention, in true Hollywood namedrop style, the 4th of July party at Michael Mann's mansion.

Night Time Flying

7/16/2009 | Chicago: Let's rewind a few days real quick and look at some photos from Willy Joy's monthly party, Fly By Night at Debonair. This party was kind of the beginning of the crazy weekend for me. After this there was no letting up until Monday rolled around. Along with Willy, Jokers of the Scene and Franki Chan played the jams. Check out all the shots here or see a few selects below.

Week in LA

7/2-7/2009 | Los Angeles: I spent a solid week in the city of Los Angeles with grand ambitions in my mind. Of course, practically nothing I had imagined doing while there was accomplished and most of the week was spent lounging around, hanging with friends, watching movies and drinking plenty of Mexican beers with plenty of tacos on the side. Looking back, I have very few regrets.

One of the main reasons I decided to head out West for two weeks was to take some time out for street photography. LA is largely bad in this area, as simply walking from one interesting location to the next might take half your day and leave you sweating uncontrollably from the relentless un-intruding sun. That being said, I spent almost the entire week hanging with friends and not wandering the endless streets of LA shooting photos. I did get a few, just enough to leave me wanting to return, which is pretty much how all of my trips to Los Angeles play out. I've been meaning to document downtown LA for perhaps 3 years now. Next time, of course!

The 4th of July was spent hopping around town. We started at the Standard Hotel downtown pool party. This experience basically sums up the side of LA I hate. There was a 40 minute wait to get in (which we bypassed cause we are VIP or whatever). Then, the guy guarding the escalator refused to let me in with my backpack, or camera, or baseball hat. No baseball hats allowed, only cool guy hats. This is the most blatantly racist rule of them all--an obvious ploy to keep black people away. After checking all my belongings at the desk, I head up to the party and grab a Corona at the bar. I don't recall the price but I do recall a quick switch to the only reasonably priced option in the place, Rainer Beer.

Our group got the hell outta there after a few hours and went to another party over in Echo Park. After somebody nearly burnt down the neighborhood with a wayward Roman Candle-into-dry-brush-lot, we acted on a tip to a mansion party in the Pacific Palisades. Sure enough, we ended up at the rumored residence of film tycoon Michael Mann, which was amusing to me as many of my friends in Chicago had just recently finished working on his movie Public Enemies. Some kids were spinning old school hip hop, all vinyl, some kids were hanging out in the giant tee pee, some kids were skinny dipping in one of the many pools and I mostly opted to sit in a rocking chair and soak in the environment. It was a great night, actually.

I had some fun with a couple of DJ gigs while out there (Unfortunately, my flashes were broken/acting up so the nightlife shots I took kinda suffered). I played Mad Mondays at the Standard Hollywood for my friend Ellei of Shadowscene fame, who was of course out of town. The party was pretty lowkey and light on attendees (surely lots of 4th hangovers) but I had a blast regardless and was stoked to see quite a few friends come out. An old high school pal also happened to be in town and texted me looking for something to do. He convinced a dozen or so of his fellow co-workers to come out, all dudes, all in town for some mechanic convention or something. I had a fun time telling the door girl to let them all in. This is basically taboo in LA. Don't go to a club with a group of guys, you won't get in.

A few nights later I played an early set at Awesometown at Short Stop. This time the place was packed and pretty crazy. Again, got to hang with some friends, including my old roommate from Chicago who lives out there now. We stopped by Little Joy for a final PBR, at which point I grabbed my DJ payday and promptly headed for a taco truck from some amazing pastor tacos.

I hate to say it but next time I'm in LA, I need a car..

Winter Music Conference pt2

Flosstradamus was easily the best dressed this year with their faux ed hardy get-ups. The final party of the conference was an epic collab between iheartcomix, mad decent, turntable lab, trouble & bass & hamburger eyes set at this gallery space near downtown Miami. The party was scheduled to go until 6am, the exact time my flight was set to depart Miami International Airport. Of course, this was the recipe for disaster. I ended up making it to the airport on time but dozed off at my gate, only to awake to an empty gate 5 minutes after my flight had left. I was super bummed nobody thought to wake me and even more worried I would never make it home, considering every flight out of town was booked solid for days to come. Long story short, the airport gods were on my side this day and US Airways hooked it up with a flight home later that day and a little cherry on the cake as well. Anyway, click the thumbs below to see all the photo madness including a party cameo from Lil Jon!

Winter Music Conference pt1

WMC began days after SXSW ended this year, so we went straight from Austin to Miami. These are photos from my first two days in South Beach. We were staying at the Gansevoort which is a pretty swank joint. Thanks to Scion for the room and the multiple parties with free food and booze. These photos are all from there or else from the Institubes party next door and Club Chicago which just opened up. As always, click the thumbs to see the entire gallery!

Texas Nightclub (IHEARTCOMIX)

Day 2 of my time in Austin sent me to the outskirts of downtown and an old Salvation Army in the middle of a strip mall. A stage and speakers were added along with a bar and plenty of free alcohol. Well, enough to last until about 3am, at least. This was the first of two parties at this location and this night was curated by iheartcomix and Jelly. Things got pretty out of control for a good portion of the night, esp when The Toxic Avenger and was playing and Ninjasonik got crazy and started a small riot in the crowd.
