The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit

Debonair Social Club was transformed into Debonair Arcade Club this past Saturday as EA Need For Speed Hot Pursuit took over the venue and decked it out with countless flat screen TVs, all of which allowed guests to preview the new game prior to its release on November 16th, a few months from now! Even more amazing were the three Lamborghinis parked out front. Along with all that crazyness, the drinks were free and Chicago Bulls star Taj Gibson was in the building testing out the new game. Chicago is the latest stop on the Need For Speed seven-city tour which heads to Seattle next on Sept 4th. I have to admit, I'm not the biggest gamer as I'm generally too broke to afford fancy game systems, however, I've always loved racing games (shoutout to World Driver Championship on N64!!) and this one looks to be top notch. Now I just need to figure out how to finally land myself a PS3. Oh, and peep the website if you want some more info about the game!

Last Week's Rehab...

I know it's over a week and change over, but here are a few photos from last week's Rehab at Debonair. I bring it up mostly because I was DJing in the basement that night and it was a ton of fun because I got to play a bunch of indie rock, alt rock and pop punk while Santi snapped some pics. If you're into that kinda stuff, be sure to come out to Beauty Bar each and every Tuesday to hear stuff you don't normally hear every night in the clubs! And be sure to wear your Be Stupid shirts if you want to drink for free this Saturday night at One Night Stand!

Checking in with Rehab

Chicago's most consistent party has been going on mostly without me these days. It's not that I'm avoiding it or anything. I've been there, just not with my camera. Luckily for us, our pal Santi has been doing a good job of keeping us in the loop. As always, you can find the party photo galleries over on the right.

It's true, Rehab is tonight (Monday night) at Debonair but these are some shots from last week's Paper Magazine event, which apparently resident DJ Skyler was not able to attend because he was stuck in a jail cell (thus the 'Free Skyler' signs). I leave town for 4 days and all sorts of crazy shit happens...

Missed Rehab

I missed this week's Rehab because I was busy at home not getting wasted, and while I may regret not being there for all the hot action, I regret it a little less now that Santi has supplied us with some photos from his night at Debonair.

Case of the Mondays

What do you know, more Rehab photos.. but this time we're excited to bring you additional coverage by our friend Santi, who will be contributing photos off and on to this blog. Everyone give him a nice welcome and then go check out his photos via the links below. Monday was an all-too-common case of a night where I plan to "go out for one" and end up going home a few hours past one, if you know what I mean.

New Year, Same Rehab

My first night out in da clubs of 2010 was spent at Rehab, of course, testing out my new Panasonic GF1. Have a long way to go with it, but it's much more subtle than lugging around my 5D, with 2 flashes and a PBR, all night long. It's a much needed break for my hand muscles, so Merry Christmas to them as well. Now I just need to get people to take me seriously when I aim the much-smaller camera in their direction. That might be a bit of a challenge.

You can see all the photos from Rehab at Debonair on January 2, 2010 here.

Debonair Pre-Halloween

October 30, 2009 | Debonair | Chicago: By now it's a few days after Halloween and the middle of the work week, meaning most of you could care less about Halloween photos. Unfortunately, I spend a little extra time with my photos before posting them online for all to see, so oftentimes I can't get things posted as soon as everyone might like. Here's hoping some of you guys notice and appreciate the extra TLC on the images. Friday night at Debonair was a good time. I DJed early in the basement and then changed hats and took photos the remainder of the night. You can see all the results here.

Dimes & Dozens

7/17/2009 | Chicago: The dubfrequency dudes had me come out and take some photos at their epic party at Debonair after the first night of Pitchfork. The lineup was jam packed and both floors were bumpin'. I'm about to fall asleep at the computer so I will leave you with the photos and bid you adieu. And yes, the remainder of the Pitchfork photos are on the way.. In the meantime, be sure to check out the 2-page photo spread in this weeks Chicago Reader!

Night Time Flying

7/16/2009 | Chicago: Let's rewind a few days real quick and look at some photos from Willy Joy's monthly party, Fly By Night at Debonair. This party was kind of the beginning of the crazy weekend for me. After this there was no letting up until Monday rolled around. Along with Willy, Jokers of the Scene and Franki Chan played the jams. Check out all the shots here or see a few selects below.
