The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

The Prodigy at Congress

I was busy DJing at Tuman's, but our new contributor Piotr was able to stop by Congress Theater and snap some shots of The Prodigy set. From all things I hear, it was very loud and very seizure-inducing. Sounds like fun! Check out a Dan Oh remix and more photos below.

New Years Eve at Congress (part 2)

So here is the second set of photos from New Years Eve at the Congress Theater here in Chicago! I took over 1,500 photos and like 30 minutes of video during the night.. pretty epic. I also managed to get way more drunk than I should've been thanks to my friends handing me drinks all night long. The entire Justice set is a blur to me. I'm amazed I got such decent shots. Oh and of course I just had to crowd surf as well. ha.

After Justice, Zebo went on for the remaining time while I attempted to sober up a bit. After the lights went on it was a mass exodous and was basically impossible to get a ride back into Wicker Park.  I ended up hitching a ride from some guy who had been driving people back and forth all night and probably made a decent amount of money doing it!

And another year bites the dust...

New Years Eve at Congress (part 1)

So 2008 has come and gone. Of course most of you probably heard about the big party that went down at Congress Theater. Justice, the crazy sensation from France, flew into town to headline the show and walk out with who knows how many thousands of dollars. The lineup was pretty solid and the show sold out. I was a bit hesitant to step foot anywhere near this place but figured it would be a good time... crazy-overload and all. Aside from a rough start with seemingly none of the staff knowing anything that was going on, the whiskeys began to flow and things got popping!

Willy Joy played before and after Home Video, who were followed by Hey Champ. DJs Peanut Butter Wolf and So Me took over and played up til midnight. In the other room, Skyler, Darkwave DJs and The Glamour got the party started.

For the most part I was running around like a mad man trying to get photos & video of everything and say hello to the endless amount of familiar faces.

These photos cover the first few hours. In the next update will be Justice and the rest of the party so stay tuned! Oh and there are also a bunch more photos over at iwas-there.com.
