The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

SXSW Austin Carniville Saturday & Afterparty

Well folks, here it is, the final SXSW post this year. I have to say, the whole time down in Austin was very fun. Lots of drinking and lack of sleep and general wandering and beer and vodka and pizza and inescapable music of all sorts. It was also very tiring and getting caught up on all the photos was super hard since I got home, since I've been busy with other stuff as well. There are two sets of photos, one via my Canon 5D and the other via the Panasonic GF1. Both cover the Carniville and afterparty.

Here are additional photos I shot with my Panasonic GF1 from Friday at SXSW. I kept the posts seperate mostly for simplicity sake, but the majority of the photos are also from the Austin Carniville, as seen in a previous post. Yay!

Austin Carniville Day 2

More photos from the Austin Carniville. Friday was easily the best of the 3 days. Great weather and great acts all day long. I took a ton of photos, these are my favorites. The Death Set killed as always. Yacht was catchy as all hell. Sleigh Bells was a lot of fun... It was a great day!

Austin Carniville Day 1

The SXSW Austin Carniville was a ton of fun. Great bands and DJs along with rides, food and free booze. The only downside was that I was basically busy the entire time in Austin and I didn't get to see much else that was going on around town. Ho hum.

iheartcomix Showcase at Beauty Bar

Thursday in Austin was a looong one. I shot the Carniville and then headed over to Beauty Bar for the iheartcomix showcase, which went til 2am and included artsits such as The Very Best, The Toxic Avenger, Men, Acid Girls, Juiceboxxx, Hollywood Holt, Ninjasonik and a bunch more. There was also a rad appearance from Bill Murray, who stuck around to watch Hollywood Holt and Ninjasoik before being mobbed by the crowd for photos and autographs. I held back and gave the dude his space. I guess I'm not cut out for the TMZ world we live in.

bingo & karaoke in austin, texas

Scenes from Austin, Texas. September, 2009. I spent half a week in Austin in the middle of my Southern roadtrip. I love Austin. I didn't take a whole lot of photos while there, mostly just relaxed and hung out with some friends, however, one night we decided to play Bingo and thankfully I had my camera along for that. We made some friends at the Bingo hall and ended up heading to a karaoke spot after Bingo ended. Needless to say, we had a ton of fun. The last few photos are from the roads between Lockhart, the spot for BBQ in Texas, and San Antonio. The cat is a stranger's cat that my friend Isabel and I befriended and I fell in love with.. Austin Nasty's

August 31, 2009 | Austin, Texas: My first night in Austin I was invited to come out to DJ Mel's weekly Monday night throwdown at this little place called Nasty's. The party has been going down for roughly a decade, which is pretty remarkable to me. Mel & Company know their way around a turntable as well. The place was full of a wide range of people, from fratty bro dudes from the nearby University of Texas, to rough and tumble looking gangsters with faces full of tattoos, and everything in between. It's a good time and if you're ever in Austin on a Monday I'd recommend checking it out. Oh, and the owner is a Packers fan originally from Wisconsin who took a liking to calling me a FIB fucking Illinois bastard all night long. Nice touch. Click here for all the shots..
