The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

Chicken Social, Tonic Room & Amp Rock..

Had a busy night last Saturday.. and a busy week, thus the delay in getting these shots up. My friend Sean put on his 12th annual chicken social at American Legion Hall. Due to me having way too much going on that night I was only able to stop in for a half hour or so on my way to Wicker Park.  In WP I stopped into Tonic Room which was pretty fun considering I wasn't in the mood to be in a crowded bar. DJ Izzo was on the decks playing some hiphop jams. The place was going pretty crazy, actually.. then it was a walk down the street to shoot at this newly opened spot called Amp Rock, which was an assignment for CS. I'll assume you will see a shot or two in the next issues, along with another shot of Hey Champ I think as well... I included some outtake shots below from there as well..

Black Friday: One-man bands and house party

You may know this dude Rory Lake from around town.. he's been hosting shows, band battles and karaoke nights for quite some time and he's quite the character. Anyway, he invited me to come out to this show at American Legion FDR Post (one of the coolest bars in town, btw) and film a little segment for the battle of the bands he's putting on Dec 11-13 at Bottom Lounge, in which I will be judging one of the nights.

I have to admit when I heard the show this night featured two "one-man bands" I was mostly skeptical. In the end I'm more than glad I went! This dude named Magic from Iowa put on an interesting set with goofy carefree jams & jokes. The other performer was more than awesome. He's from Chicago and goes by the name Lord of the Yum Yums.  I'll def be checking him out again asap! Here's a video from one of his previous shows...

After the show I headed over to my friends' place at six corners for some fantastic day-after-Thanksgiving drinking. A few friends from out of town were in the building and it was in general a good time.
