The English Surgeon

A good documentary does more to stimulate my mind than the best fictional films. The English Surgeon is above and beyond a spectacular documentary. Most scriptwriters couldn't dare compete with the sheer drama and uncomfortable tension filmmaker Geoffrey Smith captures in his real-life story of English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who became fed up with the inability of Ukrainian doctors to treat patients in need of brain operations and decided to do something about it. When a young Ukrainian man needs an operation to remove a tumor in his brain, Doctor Smith is his only hope for long-term survival. Unfortunately for this patient, modern luxuries are nowhere to be found in modern-day Ukraine and the only the way the operation can move forward is by using nothing but local anesthetics to reduce the pain of drilling thru the scull and scraping away the cancerous cells growing on his brain--In other words, doing the entire operation while completely awake and conscious. Beyond the unbelievable situations throughout the film, the simple message of humanitarianism shines.  In today's consumerist smorgasbord of a world we live in, it can be easy to forget the simple things that make being a fellow human being a rewarding experience. This film helps remind us. -Clayton Hauck

Interpol at The Vic

I covered the Interpol show last Sunday for the Chicago Reader Photo Pit. It was a bit of a challenge as the lighting was very low and almost completely from behind. Luckily for me, I had my new 5Dm2 along with me so I was able to pump the ISO up to around 5000 and still come away with very nice images. That definitely saved my ass on this assignment. Pick up a Reader and check out the few they printed!

Some Disposable Film Scans...

I had 3 cameras sitting on my desk awaiting development. My favorite part about shooting film is going to pick up the prints and discovering all the moments you had forgotten about. You don't get that feeling with digital. Alas, not the greatest shots of all but some fun ones. Moments include scenes from Austin, Miami, Chicago, Houston and some other random places. I don't even know haha.

Get Familiar!

DVAS hails from Montorontreal (that's Montreal + Toronto), Canada. They are really great and you should probably check them out. You can check out the video above (vimeo), listen to some more music on their myspace, and then see them live at Just Desserts #10 at Lincoln Hall on Saturday, September 11th. So, now you know...

Do312 "Celebrity" Kickball Game

I play kickball professionally so I figured I would clean house in the Do312 Celebrity Kickball game at Lollapalooza. Unfortunately, our team got destroyed but we had a lot of fun in the process. (youtube)

I'm on Tumblr!

So I started yet another blog... I'm on tumblr now, go follow me there! I have to say, I'm late getting into it but the ease of posting is exactly what I was looking for. You can expect to find any silly, fun, awesome, random or stupid things I find while browsing the internets posted there and hopefully, once I figure out some coding issues, I will have it all displayed here on everyoneisfamous as well...

Tuesdays Are Famous #20

Friend of everyoneisfamous.com Kyle LaMere from IshootRockstars.com stepped in and manned the (colorful!) photo booth this past week along with DJs Mad Dog 20/20, Cheap Champagne and The Mike Perry who played some amazing old jams. I wore a tie.

Next week it's myself and Just.One.Duran on music duty. As always, no cover and free vodka 10-11pm w/ rsvp (or without, ya know, whatever..)!

The Cool Kids - Gold Links Music Video

I haven't been hearing from Chicago's finest Cool Kids too much lately as they have been busy touring the world and recording with probably everyone in the hiphop world. That said, I just stumbled upon their new video for Gold Links. The song is top notch. Classic Cool Kids beat and lyrics. The video, on the other hand, while not bad could probably due with 50% less effects clutter. It's a simple video seemingly shot on one location in perhaps an hour, which is fine! Why do we need 2 days of post effects to make it look all crazy? I don't think we do. Oh well. It's still a solid production and most definitely worth a watch! (youtube)
