The Hurt Locker.![]()

My ideal movie viewing experience is one with zero expectations or even knowledge about the movie going into it. This was the case with The Hurt Locker, generally considered one of the best films of 2009 and currently up for multiple year-end awards. I did not know all this while I watched it. In fact, I knew nothing at all. It simply ended up on my Netflix queue some time ago based on something I read in passing and -- viola! One day it appeared at my doorstep.
Perhaps one of the easiest ways to make a suspenseful film is to include plenty of bombs. Time bombs, hidden bombs, remotely-detonated bombs and bombs you have to diffuse under harsh circumstances. Stick it all in an active war zone and you'll have the audience on the edge of their seats the entire duration. This is, of course, if we care about the survival of the characters we are on a journey with. The Hurt Locker gives us a handful of very likable and interesting characters -- from the guy who doesn't really belong in a war, to the alpha male who secretly doesn't want to be there, to the alpha male who only wants to be there.
The Hurt Locker is more than just a highly dramatic, highly suspenseful war drama. It takes us on a personal journey and poses subtle questions about what brings us to fight wars in the first place. Of course, along the way we are treated to some of the best reality-based action sequences of my recent memory. Without going into any more specifics, I will leave it at that and let you see for yourself; because for me, the biggest reason this movie was so special were all the details hidden within the extremely lively environment we become a witness to. -Clayton Hauck
Food, Inc.![]()

This should probably be every American's next film they watch. An insanely moving portrayal of the horrible ways we get our foods and how quality loses out to profitability -- and our health and well-being is probably not even considered at all. With more consolidation within the industry, increasingly our food sources are becoming limited in variety and harder to quality control. Bacterial outbreaks are now normal and instead of going back to basics to implement ways to avoid them in the first place, new "solutions" to the problems are invented which make the process even less organic and more complicated, creating foods that are more of a mix of chemicals, genetic modifications, preservatives and God knows what else. While it's true that feeding a nation of 300 million people is no small feat, finding a good balance where food costs are low enough and nutrition levels high enough is the real trick. A fast food hamburger, which is insanely bad for the environment by the way, should not cost less than a healthy snack but that's the system we currently have in place. Seriously, go watch this film now and end the disconnect we have with what we put in our mouths every day because, afterall, we are what we eat. -Clayton Hauck
Radio Lab. (itunes link, web link)Here is it. My favorite podcast around. Radio Lab brings a great mix of extremely interesting topics, fascinating science and mixes them together in one of the most well edited audio experiences around. Definitely check out this podcast! The first season is currently being aired here in Chicago on WBEZ. | highlights: Really, the entire first season is amazing. More specifically, the parasites episode is frighteningly good.

WTF! with Marc Maron. (itunes link, web link)
Maron provides us with a seemingly endless flow of random thoughts, interesting things and Jewey-banter*. He regularly has solid and interesting guests, mainly comedians. *inside joke | highlights: Episode 35 - Dave Pullano discuses how he broke into the film business thru his reception gig at Miramax.

ESPN: The B.S. Report with Bill Simmons. (itunes link)Bill Simmons is a great example of a modern writer done right. His columns on ESPN are largely popular but aside from that, Simmons realized early that a rock solid podcast was a great way to build a fan base--and it has, consistently putting him towards the top of itunes' most popular. If you like sports, you'll enjoy the podcast. Beyond that, you'll also find interesting guests who have little to do with sports, such as Chuck Klosterman. | highlights: Kevin Wilde's half-baked ideas, Cousin Sal & the NFL lines, Jacko bitching about the Yankees.

Photography,
Video Chances are you know who Terry Richardson is. I found this behind the scenes video interesting for a yew reasons. The most interesting being the fact that, aside from the exotic location, access to gorgeous girls willing to get completely naked, and endless cool props, what Terry is doing is nothing fancy. He's using a simple Nikon setup with a single strobe, which sticks to his signature raw point-and-shoot style aesthetics. Where Terry shines best is in his interaction with the subjects he shoots. A lot of that probably comes from his reputation but you can also see the simple joy and extreme excitement he gets from doing what he does, which I think it pretty cool. Then again, who's not going to be that excited while taking photos of nude girls in Brazil?
Watch the video above and then check out some of the calendar shots, which I have to say were not as good as I was expecting them to be based on the behind the scenes video. Oh, and if you haven't yet heard, Terry has a new tumblr blog he's been posting to very regularly. (vimeo)

The Haiti Benefit Show at Reggie's was an All-Star hiphop affair. Many of my favorite Chicago hiphop acts were there, from Rhymefest to The Cool Kids and Mic Terror to GLC, the show never really had a chance to slow down very much and I ended up taking over a thousand photos.
Personal highlights included: Kids These Days opening set (the kids can play!), the epic BBU>He Say She Say>Mano>Hollywood Holt>Mic Terror epic high energy combo & the performance and collaboration announcment from Rhymefest, Juice, Twone Gabz and Mikkey Halsted!

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn votes for himself this morning in today's primary election. I'm shooting photos for the Quinn campaign all day. More photos to come!
Words It was an incredibly bright and sunny Sunday in Chicago. And despite a night at a friend's, drinking a fair amount of Pabst Blue Ribbon and staying up til nearly 6 am to watch Andy Murray and Roger Federer live in the Australian Open Final, the overbearing 9 am sunshine prematurely lifted me from said friend's living room sofa. And by the way, if you've never gotten drunk and cheered the very British Andy Murray on in a loud British accent, I highly recommend it ("Coom oon, Ahn-dee!") . At any rate, for some, early to rise equals highly productive. For me, it equals more television than usual. And after the on-demand replay of the Taylor Lautner hosted Saturday Night Live, an occasionally funny but largely underwhelming Bowling tournament guest-announced by ESPN's Bill Simmons (see Clay's review of his podcast), and the awakening of my friend and his lady (also a friend), we actually watched something that's legitimately worth a damn.
jack unitus I recently made a little cameo in a new Mic Terror video, though you'd never know it was me unless I told you (I'm in the brown hoodie getting knocked out). I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Mic Terror is awesome. Get into it! (vimeo)
mic terror I took a thousand or so photos last night at Reggie's. Those photos are on the way sooner than later. In the meantime, you can peep a video from our friends over at Ruby Hornet. You can see me being a creep-o in the background, while Juice, Twone Gabz, Mikkey Halsted and Rhymefest (!!!) perform a song together. What's even more exciting is that at song's end, they announce they are forming an alliance and releasing an upcoming album together. This is fantastic news, considering they are some of my favorite Chicago rappers.
As a whole, the show was great. If anything, packing in so many big names is limiting as there is only time for a few songs from each artist. At one point, there was no break in the music for an hour or so. Relentless! And I need to pee! (taking notes for Claychella...) More coverage coming soon... (youtube)
